Child Protection Standards

As of February 15, 2024, the statutory obligation to have Child Protection Standards in all places where people under 18 are present comes into effect - check if your organization/entity has them!

The Standards for the Protection of Children from Abuse are a set of rules to help create a safe and welcoming environment in places where children and young people are present.

There are four standards:

Standard I. POLICY: a Child Protection from Abuse Policy document has been created and implemented at the location.

Standard II. STAFF: the organization/institution monitors, educates and engages its staff in terms of protecting children and youth from abuse.

Standard III. PROCEDURES: the institution has procedures in place to deal with suspected threats to child safety.

Standard IV. MONITORING: the organization/institution monitors and periodically verifies the compliance of its activities with the adopted child protection standards.

What do parents gain when their children are in facilities that have standards in place to protect children from abuse?

→ Awareness that the place is not staffed by people who may threaten the safety of their children.

→ Knowledge of how to raise a child without violence and teach them safety rules.

→ Information about a possible course of action in case the child's welfare is threatened.

What does the operation of such standards in a place give to the children who stay there?

→ A safe environment in which there are no people who threaten the young person.

→ Information on how to avoid danger when interacting with adults and peers in both the real and virtual worlds.

→ Knowledge of where to report if they experience abuse.

What do we as an organization/institution stand to gain by implementing standards to protect children from abuse?

→ We ensure children's safety.

→ The child is treated subjectively.

→ Positive image of our organization/institution.

→ We build public trust.

→ Clear response rules for all staff increase sense of agency and safety when reporting suspected child abuse.

→ Rules reduce our response time and search for solutions.

→ Increased sense of safety in parents and caregivers.
