EU Video Games – when education meets the world of games

Can Video Games Shape Future Citizens?

Can video games help young people better understand democracy, European Union values, and their own role in society? This is exactly the question addressed by the EU Video Games project, an Erasmus+ initiative in which the Sempre a Frente Foundation is an active partner.

Games as a Tool for Civic Education

For many young people, video games are a natural environment—a space for entertainment, competition, and collaboration. Statistics show that the vast majority of young Europeans play digital games, making them an incredibly effective medium for sharing knowledge and sparking engagement with important social issues.

The EU Video Games project harnesses this potential to introduce young people to complex topics in an attractive way, including:

  • European Union values and institutions,

  • Democracy and citizen participation in public life,

  • Critical thinking and countering disinformation,

  • Digital and social competencies.

What Will the Project Deliver?

Working alongside partners from several European countries, the project is developing a comprehensive suite of resources to help youth and youth workers utilize gaming in civic education. Key deliverables include:

  • 10 educational video games focused on democracy and EU values,

  • A technical guide on how to create games without any prior coding knowledge,

  • A content guide on integrating educational themes into gameplay,

  • A toolbox to support the game creation process,

  • Educational materials and tutorials for both youth and youth workers.

All games and tools are tested by young people and practitioners to ensure the final solutions are practical and tailored to real-world needs.

Why Does This Matter?

The project responds to the growing need to strengthen youth engagement in democratic life. By using gamification and interactive experiences, young people do more than just acquire facts; they develop:

  • Critical thinking skills,

  • Digital literacy,

  • Civic awareness,

  • A sense of agency and impact on the world around them.
